Carer’s allowance is a benefit for carers who look after someone for 35 hours or more a week. This can include:
- Helping with washing and cooking
- Taking the person you care for to a doctor’s appointment
- Helping with household tasks, like managing bills and shopping.
Although you don’t have to be related to, or live with, the person you care for, you both need to meet certain rules to be eligible for the benefit.
It’s currently paid at £67.25 a week (2020-21). It’s taxable and may affect other benefits that you receive.
