On International Nurses' Day, as the nursing profession faces unprecedented challenges globally, Gillian Kelly, West London NHS Trust's Chief Nurse and Executive Director for Allied Health Professionals and Psychological Professions has said that supporting nurses is vital to the health of our communities and economies.
“As the heart of our NHS, nurses are vital to the health of our communities. When nurses are healthy and supported, our economy, the NHS, and communities all benefit. I want to say a heartfelt thank you to each and every one of you, as we celebrate your expertise, hard work and dedication, on Nurses Day,” said Gillian.
The theme for International Nurses Day this year is Our Nurses. Our Future. Caring for nurses strengthens economies.
Gillian said that across the world, healthcare is becoming more complex, and the UK is seeing those changes as well.
"With more patients needing support, often for multiple and long-term conditions, the role of nursing is continually evolving , calling for even more adaptability, collaboration and care.
“Now more than ever, it is important that our nurses look after their wellbeing and their nursing colleagues. Don’t underestimate the importance of simple things like making sure you take your lunch break, booking your annual leave and taking the time to check in with your emotions and how you’re feeling. Ask your colleagues how they’re doing, and if you are struggling, please reach out, support is available, through work, your GP and local charities like Mind and the Samaritans.
“Thank you for your dedication, kindness, and expertise. You make a real and lasting impact on our patients, their families, and the teams you work within. You are greatly appreciated, and I’m incredibly proud of our wonderful nursing workforce.”
