Why do you stay active and what does West London Get Fit mean to you?

I stay active for three reasons.  First, to keep my body functional and ready for the future so I can remain active and keep my muscles healthy. Secondly, to improve my overall wellbeing - mentally and physically.  Lastly, I stay active because as a child I was bullied for my weight, which had a huge impact on me wanting to exercise more.  For me West London Get Fit is a reason to continue staying active and a way for me to support my colleagues and friends at the Trust.  Fitness is not only great for the physical body but also enhances our mental health. At a time where many of us maybe feeling burnt out, the West London Get Fit campaign is a reminder that we can take small steps to help us de-stress and create a well-being balance.

What challenges do you often face when exercising?

The main challenge I face is motivation, whilst I’m working. I found during COVID I was frequently feeling fatigued and as a result I had spells when I became lazy and inactive. This meant after sitting for long durations throughout the day, I began to experience aches and pains in my body. But now I face this challenge head on so I can switch off from work, I always take up some movement to be active, even if it is for 10 minutes.

What is your biggest motivation?

My biggest motivation to staying active is my future. Coming from a South Asian background, the medical statistics show I am at risk of being prone to conditions such as diabetes and cholesterol.  My family has a history of these conditions and this drives me to stay as active as I can be to minimise the risks for myself and my future family.

What advice would you give someone new to exercise?

Find an activity or exercise that really excites you.  If you enjoy what you are doing, there is a stronger likelihood you will do it more often, and be committed. So find something which you really enjoy from walking outdoors, to lifting weights, swimming, yoga, absolutely anything.

Do you have any challenges you will be taking up for 2023?

I am pledging to be part of the NHS 1000 miles challenge
