Meet Gail Dearing, Associate director of community and recovery mental health services. Gail came up with the idea to set up a West London NHS Trust running club, because she absolutely loves to run. As part of the West London Get Fit campaign, Gail shared an insight into what staying active means to her.

Why do you stay active and what does West London Get Fit mean to you?

Being active is a central part of my life, I just love how it makes me feel. The fun I have and the friendships it has led to. Being active supports my physical but more so my mental health! I'm very excited about the West London Get Fit campaign as I think it will make a positive difference to staff health and well-being.

What challenges do you often face when exercising?

Finding time, especially for walking but I fit exercise into everything I do. I avoid taking the car when I can- walk, cycle. Running is a quick activity to fit in and commuting makes sure I get my daily step count up.

What is your biggest motivation?

The love of being outdoors and staying as well as I can. Being a role model to my son is huge source of motivation.

What advice would you give someone new to exercise?

Please try and pick something you think you will enjoy first, have a motivator/buddy.

Be realistic about your aims so you feel you are achieving.

Do you have any challenges you will be taking up for 2023?

I plan to do some long walks and a few 10k runs - plus inspiring my colleagues to take up this challenge - you know who you are.

I'm also a member of Luton Good Gym. We exercise and volunteer; I aim to complete my 50 missions this year.

I'm also a park run volunteer and really want a West London NHS Trust park run take over, plus West London NHS charity runs.
