A pioneering NHS programme adopted by West London Trust is helping refugees and asylum seekers into volunteering and paid employment across London, is being celebrated in a new feature video.

The Northwest London Refugee Employment Programme offers structured pathways into meaningful work for displaced individuals. Since launching in August 202, the initiative has supported over 100 refugees and 71 asylum seekers into roles ranging from administration and domestic work to qualified positions such as doctors and nurses. The programme has not only filled critical vacancies but also brought diverse skills and perspectives into the workforce. In turn, this has helped reduce reliance on agency staff and strengthen community representation in patient care.

The programme has gained momentum across the NHS, with eight other NHS Trusts now involved. Director of Workforce Nathan Christie-Plummer adds, “By offering volunteering roles, we give people experience that prepares them for work. Patients benefit too, as they want care from people who understand their cultural backgrounds.”

The initiative began with a focus on refugees and expanded earlier this year to include asylum seekers.  Those joining us through the scheme receive tailored support to help them transition into employment, with many bringing valuable experience and cultural insight to their roles.

Programme Manager Anthony Sembatya explains, “Refugees come to the UK with a range of skills and expertise. What our scheme does is give people the confidence to harness those skills and support them back into the workplace. It has been fantastic to see so many people thrive through the scheme, whether that be through getting a job or through volunteering.”

The new video features voices from programme leads and participants, including Health Care Assistant, Hannah Njogu, a participant at the Trust, who shares her journey:

"Refugees have gone through a lot in life. They’re good people who can deliver for the community.

“I feel grateful for the support I have received through the programme, and I appreciate what I do. I was feeling that maybe I don’t deserve this, but after so much encouragement and motivation, and now I have my confidence, I just feel I can work anywhere now.”

At the West London Trust, we believe everyone deserves a chance to thrive. By working together, we can make sure refugees and asylum seekers across London get that opportunity. Be part of the journey.
