Deirdre with Maria and LPS teamEarlier this week, Deirdre Costigan MP for Ealing Southall visited West London’s Liaison Psychiatry Service (LPS) team to find out more about they do to support people with mental health conditions. Based at Ealing Hospital, LPS provide mental health support for people on the wards, in urgent care centres, and emergency departments and help general hospital staff to understand the connections between physical and mental health problems better and how best to manage these.

The team, which is comprised of psychologists, mental health nurses, therapists, social workers and doctors work closely with other service teams to ensure that patients get the best possible mental health care. During the visit Deirdre got the opportunity to speak with the wider team as well as find out some of the ways they engage with the local community as well as teams from other NHS trusts.

LPS work closely with colleagues in Ealing Hospital’s Discharge hub which deals with patients that have multiple complex needs so require specialist support which is not limited to medical issues but also social issues like homelessness.

Deirdre Costigan MP for Ealing Southall said: “I’m delighted that in Ealing Hospital, they’re working with people who have been homeless to try and help them deal with both their homelessness issues as well as their psychiatric and mental health needs. For too long, mental health has been a Cinderella service, it’s been second to physical health but that’s all changing under the government’s new 10-year plan.

She added: “It’s great work that they are doing here and I was really happy to see it.”

Reflecting on the visit Chief Executive Maria O’Brien said: “It was a pleasure to accompany Deirdre on her visit to Ealing Hospital, where she saw firsthand the dedication, compassion, and professionalism our teams bring to supporting patients and the wider community. The LPS team truly exemplifies the commitment and hard work seen across all of West London NHS Trust.”
