As we mark International Nurses’ Day on Friday we are sharing the stories of nurses working in the Trust at the beginning or early in the career to celebrate the theme #FutureOfNursing.

What inspired you to become a nurse?

After working as a residential care home manager for many years, and recognising many changes within services. I made the decision to study to become a learning disability nurse. This decision allowed me to continue to work with the same client group in a field I love . As a mature student it was also important for me to show my children that anything is possible when we put our mind to it.

What have been some of the most rewarding experiences you have had in your new role?

Being able to share knowledge on the role of learning disability nursing  to people we meet within our work. It is generally a small field and it is important to share our skills and ways of working which in turn will benefit those we support.

As we celebrate International Nurses Day, what message do you have for your fellow nurses working hard to care to their patients ?

Always think outside of the box, keep an open mind and love what you do.

What’s your hopes for the future of nursing?

I would like to see more students choose the route of learning disability nursing.

What do you want to do next?

I have always wanted to experience working as a learning disability liaison nurse, maybe one day! With that being said, we never know who we will meet, and how we will be influenced from experiences we are exposed to which will shape our journeys.

Who has inspired you?

The people I have supported throughout my career, their families, carers and the stories they share.
