As we mark International Nurses’ Day on Friday we are sharing the stories of nurses working in the Trust at the beginning or early in the career to celebrate the theme #FutureOfNursing.

First up we hear from Remeilyn Rakman, mental health nurse on Solaris Ward Forensic Services.

What inspired you to become a nurse?

Nursing is considered a noble profession that involves knowledge, commitment to care, and caring actions. My parents are my main inspiration to become a nurse. As an only child, I believe that the best way to express my love and compassion is to show my support and caring actions in their aging process through the utilization of my knowledge and skills in nursing.

What have been some of the most rewarding experiences you have had in your new role?

One of the most rewarding parts is seeing my patient recovered and a functional member of the community. I have been assigned to different nursing specializations and realized that irrespective of the nature of my clientele, the best part is making a difference in their lives and significantly impacting their health and wellness.

As we celebrate International Nurses Day, what message do you have for your fellow nurses working hard to care to their patients?

To my fellow nurses, your dedication, hard work, and perseverance have been tremendous in healthcare. Advance confidently in your dreams and endeavour to live life.

What are your hopes for the future of nursing?

I hope that the healthcare industry will fulfil the growing demands of nurses and provide adequate training, supervision, and support to nurses. Also, raise awareness about compassion fatigue and employ measures to support nurses. Furthermore, I hope that more nurses will specialize in a variety of areas in high demand to augment the needs of our community.

What do you want to do next?

It is part of my role to keep my job skills and knowledge up to date through attending Professional Development Courses, Use Online Resources provided by the trust, and professional events.

Who has inspired you?

My spouse serves as my mentor and has been my inspiration over the years. He is innovative and the source of several evidence-based initiatives in nursing. He received several distinctions from different organisations and government agencies for his tremendous contribution to healthcare and the community. The 6 Cs—care, compassion, courage, communication, commitment, and competence are embedded in his personality.
