Hospitals and community sites run by West London NHS Trust have seen an 18% reduction in direct carbon emissions since 2020 thanks to a raft of green initiatives that have taken place.
The saving equates to driving from London to Glasgow and back 8.500 times.
From opening the new Broadmoor Hospital, introducing LED lighting in our buildings, to changing a quarter of our vehicles to electric, and better managing our clinical waste, the Trust has made a concerted effort to tackle climate change so that fewer people are affected by its impact.
Over 70 members of staff have formed a sustainability group, which is helping staff and patients understand how to reduce their carbon footprint. The group has helped to spearhead a campaign to reduce glove use at West London, which has seen a 15% fall, equivalent to 125,000 gloves. The local community has been benefiting too, through recent activities like cleaning the environment next to the Grand Union Canal in Ealing.
The progress wont stop there. As part of The Trust’s new Green Plan, it aims to cut emissions further, thanks to a £4million investment to install solar panels and installing heat pumps at Broadmoor Hospital, with the Trust due to benefit from these upgrades later this year.
Tom Wright, Director of Sustainability, said: “Every step we take toward being more energy-efficient brings us closer to being able to reduce the health impacts of climate change. It also means that that we create opportunities to invest more in our services so that we can deliver better outcomes for our patients and communities.
“We’ve made good progress, and our new Green Plan charts a journey to build on these strong foundations. It is challenging and bold, but realistic, and will help us continue being more energy-efficient, cut costs, and make a lasting difference to the planet.”
To confront climate change’s mounting health risks, the NHS was the first health service worldwide to commit to reaching carbon net zero.
