The Restorative Justice Council logoWest London NHS Trust is proud to announce that Broadmoor Hospital and our workforce team have been accredited by the Restorative Justice Council (RJC) in the UK for our restorative practices in high secure forensic services and restorative resolution services. This significant milestone reflects our Trust’s commitment to delivering high-quality restorative practices.

Restorative practices are based on five core values – impartiality, integrity, trust, collaboration, and inclusivity - which guide how harm is addressed and relationships are repaired. Trained practitioners work with individuals referred to the service, creating a safe space for open dialogue and meaningful resolution.

The RJC is the national, independent membership body dedicated to advancing restorative practice across the UK. Its mission is to promote the use of restorative approaches in all settings for the benefit of society. The RJC sets rigorous standards for restorative interventions, helping communities cultivate a culture of reconciliation and empowering individuals to build strong, resilient relationships.

Achieving accreditation involves a thorough review of our practices, measured against key criteria including leadership, culture, training, embedding, and delivery targets. Our work in high-security settings has been supported by both patients and staff who have participated in restorative meetings following incidents of harm. Many have shared powerful stories about the impact of these conversations.

In most cases, engaging in restorative processes leads to positive outcomes such as the expression of apology, acceptance of accountability, and the ability to move forward from past mistakes that once felt paralysing.

Restorative practice also plays a vital role in promoting a healthy workplace culture and supporting staff retention. As a Trust, we remain committed to continuing this work and regularly review the outcomes of these processes, building a more restorative, inclusive culture for everyone.

Leeanne McGee, Chief Operating Officer for High Secure and Forensic Services at the Trust, commented on this important recognition, stating: “We are very proud that we have received this accreditation and it is testament to the hard work and commitment of staff involved.”
