Broadmoor and St Bernard’s hospitals have been chosen as examples of delivering good catering practices, as part of a government review on improving food standards in NHS hospitals published on Monday 26 October.

The review, led by renowned restauranteur and The Great British Bake Off judge, Prue Leith, consists of recommendations NHS Trusts across the country can follow, in order to provide tastier, more nutritious food for patients and staff.

St Bernard’s Hospital has been recognised for developing tailored sessions for Trust dietitians to teach patients the principles of good nutrition so they can apply these to their own diet at home. A high proportion of patients were at risk of obesity-related problems.

Meanwhile, Broadmoor Hospital received praise for its popular staff restaurant which serves healthier food options while still giving choice. These dishes are similar to what is served to the patients.

Both hospitals were visited by a hospital food review panel in late 2019.

Barbara Wood, Head of Estates and Facilities at West London NHS Trust, says:

“Patient and staff safety is our number one priority – a big part in this is raising the importance of adapting healthy lifestyles. We’ve worked very hard together, with our patients and staff, to ensure that St Bernard’s and Broadmoor hospitals follow good practice and improvements in food choices for all. We hope that these set a positive example for NHS Trusts across the country to follow.”
