A prestigious management association has recognised West London Mental Health NHS Trust’s work to put in place healthier menus that are more reminiscent of the food patients would enjoy at home.
The trust’s London facilities team have been shortlisted in the ‘Team of the Year’ category at the Health Estates and Facilities Management Association (HEFMA) Awards 2017 in recognition of new ‘fresh cook’ services launched in its medium secure units.
The awards recognise high quality facilities management within the NHS and promote the continuing professional development of NHS staff and managers. The facilities team, made up of Jennifer Holmyard, Amilcar Simoes and Balwinder Harika, worked in partnership with their outsourced catering supplier Outsourced Client Solutions (OCS) and used patient feedback to improve the dining experience for both male and female service users residing in The Orchard and Thames Lodge. As a result of this feedback, nearly 150 patients are currently receiving fresh meals after the menu, quality and volume of the food was improved.
Michael Harbour, Head of Capital and Estates at West London Mental Health NHS Trust, nominated the team for the HEFMA award and praised their dedicated attendance at meetings with staff and patients, risk management, budgeting, reduction of food wastage as well as their creation of a ‘patient dining experience forum’. Patients now have better options available to them including more vegetarian and healthier meals, and a menu with food that reminds them of home.
Michael said: “Our London facilities team have shown great commitment to catering for individual patients’ needs while supporting their recovery with inclusivity. They are constantly striving to make improvements to support patients and staff and are worthy of recognition.”
Jennifer Holmyard, Head of Facilities (London), said: “It is fantastic news that our team have been nominated for a HEFMA award as it is the first time we have been recognised outside the trust. Nourishing and appetising food that reminds our patients of home is fundamental to helping them in their recovery and wellbeing, and our fresh cook service has now achieved the highest patient satisfaction rating within forensic services.”
Winners will be revealed at the Gala Awards Dinner on Thursday 11 May at the Old Swan Hotel in Harrogate.
