Schools and rugby fans join the fight against stigma

07 Apr 2011

Signing up members at HarlequinsThis past week has been a flurry of activity as we recruit more and more members to support our Open Minds campaign to challenge mental health stigma.

On Saturday, Harlequins Rugby League fans showed great enthusiasm and support as we signed up members at their home ground, The Stoop, in Twickenham.

Harlequin’s player, Jason Golding, who is also a psychology student, said: “One in four people have a mental health issue at some point in their life and just about every person, whether they’re aware of it or not, knows someone with a mental illness.

“I encourage Quins fans to sign up to the Open Minds campaign so that we can help reduce the stigma that is currently associated with mental illness. With your support, we can make a difference and change the negative perceptions surrounding mental health.”

Storey at Ellen Wilkinson SchoolWe’ve also been visiting local senior schools to promote our CD cover design competition and encourage young people to support the campaign. Huge thanks to The Ellen Wilkinson School for Girls, St Benedict’s School, St Augustine’s Priory and Brentside High School in Ealing for their enthusiastic response.
