Quit the habit on national No Smoking Day

10 Mar 2014

Smokers across west London who want to kick the habit are being told ‘no ifs and no butts’ ahead of this week’s national No Smoking Day (12 March).  A team of experts from Smokefree Ealing, managed by West London Mental Health NHS Trust, are calling on smokers to kick the habit and to use their service to help them.

The trust works in partnership with Ealing Borough Council and other NHS providers to help those people each year who want to stop smoking.  Last year, Smokefree Ealing helped 2,000 people to quit.

Johnny Nota manages Smokefree Ealing.  He said: “National No Smoking Day provides a fantastic opportunity for those across west London who want to stop smoking to be inspired and to set realistic goals with teams of healthcare professionals. Quitting can be tremendously challenging but I want to ensure local people are at least aware that a highly specialist service exists that is run by a team of professionals and has proven to be effective in helping others overcome their addiction. I would encourage anyone looking to stop to use this awareness day as a platform to spring into action.”

Within the Ealing borough, around one in five adults smoke and it is estimated that two thirds of these want to quit. According to the British Heart Foundation, you are four times more likely to succeed in quitting if you use a stop smoking service, such as Smokefree Ealing.

Johnny added there are a number of benefits to kicking the habit. He said: “Within 24 hours, carbon monoxide will be eliminated from your body and your lungs will start to clear out mucus and other smoking debris. Within 48 hours your sense of taste and smell will pick up and within two to 12 weeks your blood circulation will improve too. And do not forget the cash incentive to stop smoking.  If you smoke 20 cigarettes a day it will cost you around £2,400 this year. For that amount you will receive an increased risk of developing illness, disability or death caused by cancer, heart or lung disease.”

As part of the lead up to the day, Smokefree Ealing will be holding a number of roadshows across the borough to advise people about the most effective way of stop smoking and to increase awareness of the service.  Time and venues as follows:

  • Tues 11 Mar (10.30am-2.30pm) Ealing Hospital
  • Tues 11 Mar (3-4.30pm) Somali Community Outreach Event, West Ealing High Street
  • Wed 12 Mar (12-2pm) Southall Market
  • Wed 12 Mar (11am-3pm) British Heart Foundation Store, West Ealing
