Karen Spick, Team Secretary at Broadmoor Hospital, part of West London Mental Health NHS Trust, has been awarded administrative staff ‘Leader of the Year’ at the prestigious Unsung Hero Awards 2018.
The Unsung Hero Awards are the only national awards for non-medical/non-clinical NHS healthcare staff and volunteers who go above and beyond the call of duty. They aim to promote the hard work that these individuals do on a daily basis, which can often be overlooked. The Unsung Hero Awards are organised by recruitment provider ‘GoToJobBoard’ and are in their fourth year; this year attracting over 400 entries from across England and Wales.
Karen was nominated in the Admin and Clerical Leader of the Year category for her administrative excellence, high efficiency and for putting the needs of others first. Karen’s nomination stated that her “willingness to step in, take charge and ease the burden of others is what makes Karen a true heroine and unsung leader.” She was also praised for taking pride in her work and having a great sense of humour which “often reduces her colleagues to tears.” Karen also won Employee of the Year at the Trust’s staff Quality Awards in 2017.
Reflecting on her Unsung Hero Award win, Karen said: “I am honoured to have been nominated, shortlisted and to have won the Leader of the Year award – especially as I wasn’t expecting to win! It’s great to have been recognised by the Unsung Hero Awards despite being behind-the-scenes. I love my job and feel proud to support those on the frontline in the NHS. I was thrilled on the night, and it topped off my birthday week too.”
Carolyn Regan, Chief Executive of West London Mental Health NHS Trust, said: “Karen represents the thousands of NHS staff who support all our staff working on the frontline. Karen’s dedication cannot be overstated, her work record is exemplary and she is well regarded by her colleagues. We are exceptionally fortunate to have staff like her who put so much care and effort into their work and are an essential part of our workforce. I am delighted that Karen’s talents have been acknowledged in her win at the national Unsung Hero Awards in the Admin and Clerical category, and also at the Trust’s staff Quality Awards last year.”
The Trust’s Portering Team at St Bernard’s Hospital were also shortlisted for ‘Team of the Year’ in the Ancillary Staff category respectively.
Winners were announced at an awards ceremony attended by former Health Secretary and Manchester Mayor, Andy Burnham, at The Principal Hotel in Manchester on Friday 23 February 2018.
