West London Mental Health NHS Trust has appointed Dr Amlan Basu as clinical director for Broadmoor Hospital.
Dr Basu will be responsible for providing clinical leadership to the hospital, ensuring that patients are treated with evidence-based interventions and that a strong safety culture is maintained for patients, staff and the public.
He will take up the role on 31 March 2014, replacing Dr Kevin Murray, who is stepping down from the clinical director role he has held since 2001 and continuing with a part time clinical and research role.
Commenting on his appointment, Dr Basu said: “I am delighted to be taking up the role of clinical director which will be hugely demanding and rewarding in equal measure.
“It is an extremely exciting time for Broadmoor Hospital as we have begun work on redeveloping the site that will see our patients being treated in modern, purpose-built accommodation. I am looking forward to driving this programme forward.”
Trust medical director, Dr Nick Broughton, said: “Dr Amlan Basu is an outstanding clinician with considerable expertise in forensic psychiatry. I am confident that he will ensure that our patients continue to benefit from an evidence-based approach to care and recovery and look forward to working with him.
“I would also like to thank and pay tribute to Dr Kevin Murray who has been an outstanding clinical director for over a decade. Dr Murray has contributed greatly to improving the quality, safety and experience of care that patients at Broadmoor Hospital receive.
Dr Basu has worked at Broadmoor since 2010 as a consultant forensic psychiatrist, and prior to this has worked in a number of NHS trusts, including the South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. Dr Basu has a background in research at the Institute of Psychiatry, King’s College London, and is a member of the Expert Witness Institute.
