Smokefree Ealing supports Stoptober

30 Sep 2015

Smokefree Ealing’s ‘stop smoking’ team will be at various locations across the borough during October, to support local people in quitting smoking.

The stop smoking team, run as part of the West London Mental Health NHS Trust, will also be offering dedicated support to mental health staff and patients as the trust works to become a smoke-free organisation across all sites by January 2016.

Beverley Murphy, director of nursing and patient experience, said: “This year ensuring that our sites become smoke free is one our improvement priorities, and so we are working hard to give those who need it the support to give up smoking.”

Last year, nearly a quarter of a million people took the Stoptober quit smoking challenge across England and Wales.  Since the campaign launched in 2012, Smokefree Ealing has helped around 6,000 people to give up.

Smokefree Ealing manager, Johnny Nota, said: “We’d like as many people as possible to participate in this campaign.  Stoptober is an ideal opportunity to make full use of all of the available support to quit.  When a person stops smoking for a minimum of one month, they are much more likely to quit in the long-term.”

Johnny added: “As well as the benefits to your wellbeing, your wallet will be healthier.  The average smoker who successfully quits the habit would save around £150 per month which amounts to around £2,000 each year.”

During the campaign, Smokefree Ealing will be running a free six-week stop smoking programme, with expert advice and medication on prescription. They will also be issuing stop smoking information, access to free home fire safety visits, and a ‘quit kit’ which contains practical tips on the most effective ways to give up smoking.  Additionally, there are stop smoking clinics running in Southall, Northolt, Ealing, West and Acton.
