Ealing residents seeking help to lead healthier lives will benefit from public health services that are more joined up by West London Mental Health Trust. The trust has won the contract to manage a pioneering integrated lifestyle service for the borough of Ealing. The aim of the service is to support people in adopting and maintaining a more healthy way of life, and reduce health inequalities across the borough.
Under the trust’s management, the service will provide primary care, along with both physical and mental healthcare, to local people. A central point of access for services will be developed; it is to be called the Healthy Lifestyle Hub. It will provide residents with information and access to various services such as:
- Smoking cessation
- Health checks
- Health trainers
- Help with childhood obesity
- ESOL (English for speakers of other languages) classes
- TB outreach
Healthy lifestyle services are currently commissioned and delivered in a variety of different locations, all with different access and referral processes. This means that services have treated people’s individual conditions separately, rather than looking at how they work together. Under the trust’s management, the service will now deliver more coordinated help, which integrates various aspects of healthcare and responds to the lifestyle needs of local residents.
The service will begin in April 2016 and will be supported through partnership arrangements with Southall Community Alliance, Carillion Libraries and To Health. The new service is expected to receive over 5,000 referrals a year, from GPs, primary care teams in the community, and acute hospitals that serve Ealing.
Carolyn Regan, chief executive of the trust, said: “This is an excellent opportunity for the trust, and I’d like to thank everyone who has been involved and worked so hard to make this happen. I am confident that patients will experience care that is more joined-up, and which supports them in accessing appropriate integrated services which will enhance their health and wellbeing. The new service will build upon the positive reputation of Smokefree Ealing, providing a single route for patients to access support to improve their wellbeing.”
