Celebrating our volunteers

08 Jun 2012

Volunteers Week logo1-7 June is Volunteers Weeks and we’re celebrating all of the amazing people who give their time, energy and skills to help improve the lives of our patients.

Volunteers Weeks is an annual event which celebrates the fantastic contribution that millions of volunteers make across the UK. It’s a great way of raising the profile of people who contribute to society and inspiring others to get involved too.

Rebecca, who volunteers with a local community sports group, shared her rewarding experience.

“It’s my favourite time of the week. The group is fantastic and very supportive of each other. I work alongside an occupational therapist, encouraging people to take part, organising games and playing myself.

“I feel I’ve gained so much more from the group than I have given. It’s been incredibly rewarding to watch new members learn and develop, share some of their frustrations and their joys. It’s been an immense privilege to be a volunteer.”

Zahra wanted to share her clinical experience and was placed as a volunteer with a home treatment team.

“I wanted to share fresh thinking in working alongside services users and staff by supporting the team with clients from the same cultural background as myself and in sharing my experiences, contributed by raising cultural awareness.

“In the nine months of volunteering I have been impressed with how the multidisciplinary nature of the team supports clients and their families in their home. Volunteering with the team was an extremely valuable experience. It gave me insight into how teams work together, sharing experiences and learning together, as they make decisions.

Working with the psychology team has also been a very positive experience. I feel very privileged to have worked with my mentor and the home treatment team.
