On Friday 26 April 2019, Broadmoor Hospital’s Sheffield Ward and Buckinghamshire New University were announced as the winner of the ‘Student Placement of the Year: Hospital’ category, at the Student Nursing Times Award ceremony, Grosvenor House, London.
The ward was nominated by one of its student nurses, Emily Crellin, who had been placed there last year as part of her pre-registration Mental Health Nursing PGDip programme with Buckinghamshire New University.
Nyarai Chuma, Team Leader on Sheffield Ward, said: “It is such an honour to receive this award. To be nominated by Emily, who experienced the ward first hand as a student, is a real testament not only to the compassion our staff have for our patients, but also the way our staff support each other and in particular our student nurses.”
Emily Crellin, who nominated the team, added: “I’m so pleased that Sheffield Ward has won this award. I cannot thank the staff on this ward enough for all the help and support they provided me during my placement. My first day at Broadmoor was the first time I had been in any forensic setting as well as my first time on a male only ward, so I had been extremely anxious. I’m so grateful to the whole team for putting me at ease and helping me to deliver my best, during my time on the ward.”
Jimmy Noak, West London NHS Trust’s Deputy Director of Nursing, said: “It’s great to be recognised for the training, support and placement experience we provide to student nurses. We aim to ensure our student nurses gain valuable, on-the-job experience of the type they cannot learn in the lecture theatre.
