All social visits, including from main carers, have now been stopped at Broadmoor Hospital in an attempt to reduce the spread of Coronavirus (Covid-19),
Wherever possible, we are asking that legal consultations take place over the phone.
We understand that this may be upsetting for you and patients.
The Broadmoor Social Work team will continue to support you through these difficult times and we are exploring some alternative means of communication between patients and their families and will update you accordingly.

At Broadmoor Hospital, we recognise and value carers as key partners in supporting patients on the road to recovery.
A carer may be a relative, a friend or someone else who cares for a patient.

A copy of this information is available on request at the hospital for patients’ main carers.
The hospital is signed up to the Triangle of Care, a national programme developed by staff and carers to ensure collaboration between the service user, professional and carer. We also encourage carer involvement in many different aspects of services which we provide.
Social workers are the main link between the hospital and carers.
If you’re a carer for a patient at Broadmoor, we’ll always let you know the name of your relative or friend’s social worker. The social worker will be in regular contact with you and can offer you support in your role as a carer.
The Carers’ Forum meets four times a year to give carers the opportunity to meet staff and other carers.

The hospital runs a monthly minibus service for carers between Broadmoor and Crowthorne, Bracknell and Wokingham train stations
The bus will run on the following dates:

Please call 01344 754475 to check dates, make a booking, and arrange a pick-up time. Please have the following details to hand when you call:
- Your name and contact number on the day
- Number of seats you need
- Name of the patient you’re visiting
- Train station and arrival time
- Special requirements, such as wheelchair access.
- If you’re travelling with a child who’s too small to use a booster seat, you’ll need to bring your own car seat.
Travel and accommodation
The hospital is able to offer some travel and accommodation services. Anyone visiting a relative or friend is entitled to claim a 50% reimbursement of public transport costs following their visit. Claim forms are available here and at reception.
Please give your completed form to a member of reception staff, together with receipts relating to your journey. It will take us a few days to process your refund before you are reimbursed.For some carers/families, the hospital may be able to provide overnight accommodation (for example, if you have had to travel a very long way). The hospital social worker can provide you with further information.
If you're attending a Carers’ Strategy Meeting, Carers’ Forum or other meeting for which we have requested your attendance, you'll be entitled to a 100% reimbursement of your public transport costs. The process for claiming a refund is that same as when visiting your friend or relative, although you will need to complete a different claim form. You can download this here. Forms can also be obtained from the hospital’s Social Work department, and once complete, should be handed into the Social Work department.
Your rights under the Care Act 2014
As a carer, you have a legally recognised status as such under The Care Act 2014.
This means that you're entitled to have a carer’s assessment undertaken by your local authority, or by us on behalf of your local authority, to help identify any needs you may have in your role as a carer. The local authority may then be able to provide assistance in meeting your needs. This could include:
- Emotional support through counselling or befriending schemes
- Help with accessing local support services for carers
- Limited financial support to help with travelling costs
- Support with physical health needs, such as adaptations to help you fulfil your role as a carer.
Social care needs assessment
If you have any recognised disability, mobility issues or any other social care needs, you may also be eligible for a social care needs assessment in your own right. This again would usually be undertaken by your local authority but can be undertaken by us on their behalf.
