The film is the result of a five-year collaboration between the trust and award-winning director Olivia Lichtenstein and producer Jonathan Levi.
Together we worked out a careful access agreement, designed to protect patients’ confidentiality and staff. The trust and ITV agreed that patients should not be identified, so the crew used methods to disguise their identity.
Filming lasted 9 months, from Christmas 2013 to August 2014, and the crew were given unique access and support from Broadmoor Hospital staff and the communications team to help them build a complete picture of the hospital from admission to discharge.
They were able to film the kitchens, grounds, therapies, activities, family meetings, tribunals, admissions and discharges, and in every kind of ward, from intensive care for the most disturbed patients to assertive rehabilitation, whose patients are closer to discharge.
